Punched In The Gut?

Ever since the hype-machine behind Zack Snyder’s Sucker Punch started, I’ve been sticking to my guns and saying “It’s going to be absolutely terrible.” I could have just gone with “terrible” or even just “bad” but having seen what he did with 300, which was, in my opinion, a turgid waste of money, I just had a hunch – a very strong and completely justified hunch, I might add – that this next film would be nonsensical rubbish. Don’t get me wrong, I loved the idea behind the film. The concept seemed like a good one, and it seemed that with the amount of money being thrown at it, it couldn’t not be great. But alas today is the day that I look on Rotten Tomatoes to see what the critics made of the première. And guess what? It got panned.

Of course, you could say that it’s pure fantasy. That the idea of a load of young women struggling to escape a mental asylum through carnage and positive action will prove empowering to women for generations to come. Or you could just say this: Sucker Punch is probably – and I say this because I haven’t actually seen it yet – just what happens when you give a moderately successful director too much money and license to do what he pleases. Yes, you can chuck a lot of mud at a wall and eventually it will stick, but wouldn’t it have been better to get the mixture right first by taking out all the tripe that makes it fall apart?

Maybe it’s just me but I suggest Snyder takes some inspiration from anything else – Free Antivirus Downloads , for example, or even an old episode of Neighbours, maybe – and changes direction. Before this train completely derails and kills anyone within a ten mile radius.
